My latest artwork - My Mother's 80th Birthday Cake approx 12 x12 inch

This is my second attempt at a fondant cake the last one was when I was 14.

Fruit Cake, Mazipan layer, white fondant layer.

I hand coloured and made all the flowers, leaves, bee, snail, ladybirds, butterfly, 80th and the angels on the corners are from mazipan. Used geletin for the waterdrops on the roses.

Jo (Johanna) I used my newly acquired wire wrapping skills is made from nickel silver.

The Angel is ceramic and the grasses are plastic.

Her Birthday was yesterday, she loved the cake that much she wouldn't let it be cut up.

Maybe I should put this in the sculpture section as it will not be eaten.

OH my god, but that is brilliant i made a cake the other day that turned out like it had been made by a child, tasted all right but was nothing like the photo in the book. Very impressed!

thankyou, mine probably tastes terrible, used 4 supermarket fruit cakes and glued them together ( with 'no more gaps' of course). I am a hopeless cook but decorating for me is like a form of sculpture. This is the second fondant cake I have made (the last one one 40 years ago) that hasnt been cut up, so it doesnt matter what it tastes like. This was my design which I was pleased with but its not something I would want to do for a living, toooooo time consuming. I was making the roses from a youtube tutorial, pause, play, pause, play, repeat, so I am in front of may screen with plastiic on the table, rolling pin and may sculpture tools. A book suggested using gin instead of water for gluing and painting with food colouring so I had a wonderful time. (not much gin left).

The family hasnt asked me to make a cake for years because I made a chocolate birthday cake which I decorated with frosting and real snail shells ( I did wash and boil them in salt), my brother in-law was horrified, he would not eat the cake. That is why there is a marzipan snail on the cake, a family joke. :iconsnailpz:

PS I love the woman from the Vicar of Dibley who decorates cake with vegemite icing/ tomato sauce, etc, I would love to do that one year. My brother suggested dipping the snail shells in chocolate for my brother in law as he does like chocolates, then watch as he eats them.

You'd make an interesting TV cooking show.I'd imagine you'd be a good cook it's all about creating. Me I like flavor but once I nearly killed people with a rather dodgy lamb stew, you have to be so careful.

I will tell my brother in law about the cooking show, it could be a hit/comedy. I can follow a recipe book but when you live on your own its pointless going to any trouble. I eat to live, not live to eat, but I do appreciate good food, people who love cooking make the best food as they understand flavour and combinations.

That's true,cooking for yourself is no fun, and also I find I don't really taste it so much when I cook it.Friend of my mine lives on his own and some of the concoctions he's come up with out of what's in the fridge is kinda frightening.
