First of all, I must say that there won't be much to write the critique about - this painting is technically done really really well and looking at your gallery - you perfectly know how to deal with paints.
The thing that I especially like about this is how you've managed to paint all the cloth in this picture. They all have got their own structure and I can easily imagine what they are like in real, what would I feel if I touched them. The blue blouse is a nice focal point and the subtle hints of your son's creatures in the background fill the places that would look too empty otherwise.
You've mentioned in your comment request that this piece didn't get into a portrait contest. I don't know the details of the contest, therefore I can't clearly say why did it happen, however I may have a theory on that and if you could provide me with further details, I'd like to discuss on it more. The problem's root may lay in the technique decription of what a portrait is - from wikipedia: "A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant", and from our dA gallery description: "Paintings of a person, especially ones showing the face". So maybe the contest's organiser didn't consider this painting as a portrait, as their faces aren't the main part of the painting.
Nevertheless, this painting is really well done and there are no technical issues that could cause the mentioned rejections, you've got nothing to worry about, Astrid!
